Norris Lake, or Norris Reservoir, is popular in East Tennessee. It's about 20 miles north of Knoxville. The Norris Dam was built in 1936. It controls floods, stores water, and generates power. The lake was named after U.S. Senator George W. Norris, who played a key role in establishing the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Over the years, it has become a popular destination for family vacations.
Norris Lake stretches about 73 miles up the Clinch River and 56 miles up the Powell River, covering over 34,000 acres of water and featuring approximately 800 miles of shoreline. With a maximum depth of 210 feet, it is renowned for its clean waters, making it one of the TVA's cleanest lakes. The surrounding area includes three state parks and offers numerous recreational opportunities like boating, fishing, swimming, and hiking.
The landscape around Norris Lake is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, featuring three state parks, two wildlife management areas, and 59 public access sites. The diverse shoreline includes picnic areas, caves, cliffs, beaches, and gently sloping shorelines, perfect for family fun. Wildlife is abundant, with frequent sightings of deer, turkey, great blue herons, and even eagles along the shore. Norris Lake also harbors hidden gems, such as secluded coves and lesser-known hiking trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints, offering a serene escape for those looking to explore beyond the well-trodden paths.
Surrounding the dam is the Norris Dam State Park, which offers a wide range of kid-friendly activities and facilities. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails, playgrounds, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and various recreational programs designed for children. The park also features campgrounds, picnic areas, and cabin rentals, perfect for a family getaway. A visitor center and overlook provide stunning views of the lake and still waters, making it a must-visit spot for photographers.
The Norris Dam area encompasses the Clinch River from the dam to Anderson County Park, along with Big Creek and Cove Creek. Notable spots include the Lighthouse Marina, which overlooks the dam waters where Cove Creek meets the Clinch River. Cove Creek flows from Cove Lake State Park towards the dam, passing by Twin Cove Marina and Mountain Lake Marina. Big Creek, which flows from Campbell County Park, is home to the Indian River Marina and Whitman Hollow Marina.
The Norris Lake area boasts over 20 full-service marinas, offering accommodations ranging from hotels and condos to houseboats and camping facilities. Many marinas also host restaurants and live entertainment, enhancing the visitor experience.
